Disassembly and assembly

Assembly of furniture for your move

assembly of furniture when moving means: large pieces of furniture are dismantled properly, prepared for transport and reassembled at the new address. It is precisely at these three stages that most moving damages arise – a poorly dismantled wardrobe or a bed assembled under tension is then difficult to correct.

This page shows what belongs to furniture assembly, what types of furniture require special attention, how liability is settled and what factors determine the price.

Dismantling: dismantling before moving

Dismantling generally takes place on the day of the move, for large households also the day before. The main thing is the method: fittings, screws and small parts are labeled by piece of furniture and packaged separately, so that nothing is missing when reassembling.

Doors and drawers are unhooked, glass elements removed and wedged in place one by one. For screwed assemblies in particle boards: each additional dismantling weakens the thread – so only dismantle what is really necessary for transport and access.

  • Document the fittings: Screws, dowels and connectors packaged and labeled per piece of furniture.
  • Glass and mirrors apart: Window doors and mirrors are removed and transported propped up.
  • Only as much as necessary: Too frequent disassembly permanently loosens the threads in the particle boards.

Preparation for transport of parts

Disassembled furniture is more sensitive than assembled: the edges of the body and doors easily bump into the vehicle. The plates are therefore protected with covers or film, the edges wedged and the loaded parts upright and secured.

Solid wood fronts, glossy surfaces and veneers require additional protection, as scratches are immediately visible. Metal parts and rails are packaged separately, so that they do not damage the surfaces.

Installation at the new address

Assembly is ideally done the same day, so that in the evening you will have a usable bed and installed wardrobes. A fixed sequence is useful: first beds and wardrobes, then living room and office.

Two details decide the result. First, align on uneven floors – an out-of-level cabinet won’t close properly. Secondly, wall units in Switzerland must be fixed to the wall for safety reasons; this assumes that the fixing is suitable for the wall and that agreements are made with the rental company.

  • Ordre: Beds and wardrobes first – the rest follows according to priority.
  • Aligner: On uneven floors, level with glides and adjustment feet.
  • Anti-basculement: Fix tall furniture to the wall; clarify the type of fixation with the rental.

Wardrobes, beds and large furniture

Not all furniture is equally demanding. These types require special attention:

  • Clothes Closets and Wardrobe Walls: Multi-part bodies must be dismantled. Sliding door systems require precise alignment, otherwise the doors will not run.
  • Built-in wardrobes and dressing rooms: Custom adapted systems often cannot be reused in the new location – check beforehand and plan for adaptation.
  • Lits boxspring: Heavy and bulky, often only removable to a limited extent. Access determines whether a furniture lift is necessary.
  • Cuisines: Water, electricity and appliance connections are part of the planning. Electrical and sanitary work is a separate profession.
  • Solid wood tables and glass furniture: Weight and risk of breakage require more personnel and support.
  • Office furniture: Height-adjustable tables and shelving systems are generally dismantled and reassembled with an assembly plan.

Liability for assembly damage

If the moving company undertakes the dismantling and assembly, it is liable for any resulting damage – within the framework of the agreed cover. This is the essential advantage compared to self-assembly: a torn thread or a scratch on a shiny facade is then a declared disaster and not your problem.

Two restrictions are usual and should be clarified beforehand. First: for furniture that has already been dismantled several times or with pre-existing damage, liability is often limited – record the condition with photos. Second: some providers exclude certain system furniture. Indicate in writing in the offer the amount of cover, exclusions and reporting deadline.

What factors determine the price

Furniture assembly is calculated according to effort, most often per piece of furniture or per hour.

  • Number and size of furniture: A wall of cabinets is several pieces of furniture – the number of pieces matters, not the number of bedrooms.
  • Complexity: Sliding doors, built-in systems and height-adjustable tables take more time than a standard shelf.
  • Condition and age: Furniture that has already been dismantled several times requires more careful work.
  • Access: Narrow stairwells or lack of elevator lengthen the path between vehicle and assembly location.
  • Niche: Same day assembly requires more staff than next day assembly.
  • Additional work: Anti-tilt, mounting of lamps or adaptations to existing furniture.

Request the assembly of furniture with the moving offer

Indicate in the form which pieces of furniture need to be dismantled and reassembled and whether there are special rooms such as wardrobe walls, boxspring beds or height-adjustable tables. The more concrete the list, the more restrictive the calculation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Furniture assembly

How much does it cost to assemble furniture when moving?
Billing is most often done per piece of furniture or by the hour. Number and complexity of furniture, their condition, access and the desired niche determine the effort. Indicate the position separately in the offer.
Do you always have to dismantle furniture for moving?
No. We dismantle what is necessary for transport or access. As each dismantling stresses the screw connections in the particle boards, as much as possible is left assembled – in a narrow stairwell, however, this can rarely be avoided.
Who is responsible if something is damaged during assembly?
If the moving company undertakes the assembly, it responds within the framework of the agreed coverage. For furniture with pre-existing damage or dismantled several times, liability is often limited – record the condition photographically beforehand.
Is the kitchen also assembled?
The furniture part yes, the water, electricity and appliance connections are however a separate job. Plan sanitary and electrical work separately and coordinate the dates with the move.
Are the wall units attached to the wall?
For safety reasons, an anti-tip device is useful for tall cabinets. Agree on the type of fixing and any drilling with the front rental.
